A Healthy Environment for Work and Play

At The Green Temple, we care about the planet. That’s why we decided to become the first 100% carbon-neutral public canal house in Amsterdam!

Even if sustainability isn’t on your company’s agenda at the moment, there are a number of reasons that you should pay attention to our sustainable space.

Breathe easy in our toxin-free environment

Sick building syndrome” is a term used describe the many negative health and comfort effects that occupants of a building experience after a long time of exposure to the building. Often symptoms include headaches, eye pain, nose and throat irritation, fatigue, dizziness, and even sometimes nausea. While these symptoms are linked to building materials themselves, a 2015 study of office buildings in Iran also found that they can also be seen as CO2 levels increase, something that happens over the course of the day as we breathe!

At The Green Temple, you won’t experience any of these problems. We’ve taken great care to design our space with optimal health in mind. We’ve used only organic materials that emit no toxins into the air, so you can breathe easy in our environment. From our sand-cement floors from van Binnen to our clay plaster walls and the paint on them, we’ve meticulously researched the best building materials out there that keep dangerous chemicals and toxins out of the air. Our 18m2 Green Wall and over 50 other plants actively absorb the carbon dioxide that we breathe out and refresh the air with invigorating oxygen. These little details make the world of a difference, and the effect of our sustainable building solutions can be felt the moment you walk in the front door.

A space with a soul

When you walk into The Green Temple, you see immediately that “old is the new ‘new.’” As a true representation of the possibilities of the circular economy, our space is built entirely out of upcycled and recycled materials. We figured that enough building materials have been produced in the past, we might as well make use of them!

Every piece inside of our building has a story, and in many ways it is a living museum. Our wooden tables have been in our neighbourhood for over 300 years and used to serve as the the floorboards of the Wester Tower, located just down the Prinsengracht canal and made famous in Anne Frank’s diary. The tiles in our bathroom have been in canal houses since the 1680s. The chairs that you sit in are vintage Mauser designs. Even the modern green benches in the cafe have a story—they were hand-made by us!

Do Good By the Earth

Since sustainability is our focus, there are several logical steps that we have made to reduce our environmental impact. Simply by booking with us you are contributing positively to the planet. The Green Temple is the only location in the city center of Amsterdam where your event can have zero carbon footprint, something that is sure to impress your clients and employees alike.

Vegetarian Food

“So what would happen if the entire world reduced its meat consumption? The impacts on global warming could actually be fairly significant — a difference of around 0.5°C or more.” VOX

Our vegetarian kitchen helps reduce our overall carbon footprint by as much as 50%  compared to other kitchens that feature meat dishes. It’s also healthier in general; red meat has been labeled as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization and is linked to a number of diseases.

Waste Management

Humans generate a huge amount of waste. In 2014, that number was 2,503,000 tons across all 28 EU member countries! This boiled down to 474 kg of municipal waste per person.

While waste is unavoidable, we do take certain measures to reduce the amount that we generate. In addition to being entirely climate-neutral, we recycle everything we possibly can, making the 550 meter trek to the recycling station multiple times per week.
